Meet Vicki Ellis Hatch MS,RDN,LDN,CDE at the Hallandale Beach location of Family Nutrition Center of South Florida

VICKI ELLIS HATCH is a Nutrition, Healthcare and Fitness Expert and Certified Diabetes Educator with over 25 years of experience leading clients to improved clinical and lifestyle outcomes.

A native to Miami Beach, Florida, Vicki has been involved with sports and nutrition her whole life. Her first career was that of a tennis professional. She played and ​competed in junior tennis in Florida and throughout the United States; then received a four year scholarship to play tennis for the University of Texas at Austin. She competed professionally on the women’s tennis circuit, and then became the Director of Tennis at many luxurious tennis clubs in South Florida. Vicki also coached at the University of Texas at Austin, where she led the Texas Lady Longhorn Tennis team to capture two (2) national collegiate NCAA Division I Championship titles.

For the last 20 plus years, Vicki has taken her game indoors as a Registered Licensed Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator in private practice in the Aventura area. She also has a well-rounded clinical background in the hospital settings: Aventura Hospital, Mercy Hospital and Memorial Healthcare System as a dietitian and Clinical Nutrition Manager. Vicki specializes in pediatric, teen, adult, and geriatric populations, with expertise in areas of Diabetes, Weight Management, Gastrointestinal Health, Sports Nutrition, Eating Disorders, Cardiovascular disease/Cholesterol management, Renal Disease, Healthy Pregnancy Outcomes, and Corporate Health.

She spends a great deal of time helping patients to organize their busy lifestyles, as well as sifting through the myriad of nutrition and health information, educating and guiding her patients- in a safe, healthy and productive environment that provide solutions and produce results. Vicki truly enjoys speaking and motivating. She has inspired many- both young and old. She has provided talks on Nutrition and Health at major corporations, works year round with children’s groups to promote healthy eating and healthy minds for young people, has been quoted and published in the Miami Herald, and on local television networks and radio.

As part of Family Nutrition Center of South Florida, Vicki’s office is located in our Hallandale Beach location. She provides Medical Nutrition Therapy and continued support to patients worldwide via face to face visits, and online and telephonic communication. Nutrition Expert: Toby Smithson, RD, LDN, CDE

the greater Chicago Area, where Toby Smithson, RD, LDN, CDE
is making a difference everyday in the lives of people with diabetes.


Toby Smithson is a Registered Dietitian, a national media spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, Past President of the Illinois Dietetic Association, a Certified Diabetes Educator, and holds a certification in adult weight management. She earned her B.S. Degree in Dietetics, Nutrition and Food Science through the Coordinated Undergraduate Program at Northern Illinois University, and has worked professionally in institutional, clinical and public health settings.

Toby founded DiabetesEveryDay to provide guidance and continuous support every day to people with diabetes. Toby was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in October, 1968, and has successfully managed her diabetes personally every single day. Toby shares her own personal insights into successful diabetes self-management, as well as her knowledge and experience as a registered dietitian.

  • Completes a supervised professional practice of at least 500 hours.
  • Passes a national examination prepared by the countries dietetic and nutrition authority.

My next stop on my Dietitian journey through the Internet brings me to the
Hispanic Foodways and Lorena Drago, MS, RD, CDN, CDE

Lorena Drago is a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator, author and consultant. She is senior associate director of Ambulatory Care Nutrition Programs at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx and maintains her own private practice.

Lorena is the owner of Hispanic Foodways, which specializes in the multicultural aspects of diabetes self-management education, creating culturally and ethnically-oriented nutrition and diabetes education materials. She is the author of Beyond Rice and Beans: Caribbean Latino Guide to Eating Healthy with Diabetes and a contributing author and co-editor of Cultural Food Practices and Diabetes.

Lorena has appeared on several TV shows speaking about diabetes management, including The Early Show, CNBC's dLife TV and New York’s “ Diálogo con Glenis” a live Spanish community cable show, where she discusses nutrition and diabetes, topics especially relevant to the Latin community of the Bronx.

Lorena served on the American Association of Diabetes Educators board of directors and volunteered as a nominating committee chair of the Member Interest Group Latinos and Hispanics in Dietetics and Nutrition; chair of the American Diabetes Association Latino Committee and as past president of the Metropolitan New York Association of Diabetes Educators in 2004.

Drago graduated from Hunter College of the City University of New York with a Masters of Science degree in Food and Nutrition, and received her BA in Home Economics, Food and Nutrition from Queens College.

Summary: Beyond Rice and Beans: Caribbean Latino Guide to Eating Healthy with Diabetes. Written in Spanish and English, the book features new food pyramids and menu plans specifically designed for the Latin American palate from all over the Caribbean. It is a great resource for dietitians and people who want to manage their diabetes but don't want to sacrifice cultural identity. The book shows Latin Americans with diabetes how they can easily design meals that fit into a healthy lifestyle without giving up taste or familiar staples. Included are a Latin American food dictionary, advice on handling holiday meals and how to decipher Spanish food labels.

Traveling the Internet and discovering the many talented dietitians is a wonderful experience.  I have learned about the numerous specialties, cultural diversity, advances in research, legislative news, current events, ADA campaigns, new recipes and I even made some new friends along the way.

Susan Weiner is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Educator and Certified Dietitian and Nutritionist. She is currently in private practice in New York. 
Experiences

1. Contributing medical producer for dLife TV and serves as a member of dLifes medical advisory board.  dLife - For Your Diabetes Life is an educational resource for people with diabetes as well as professionals in the diabetes community. 
2. Nutritionist and certified diabetes educator for the diabetes program TheBestLife.com, Bob Greene’s health and weight loss website. She provides articles to the site and is available to answer the “ask the expert” diabetes questions. Susan contributed  consultation in The Best Life Guide to Managing Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes (Simon & Schuster 2009). This book launched TheBestLife.com website.
3. Well respected lecturer for many professional organizations including the American College of Sports Medicine.

4. Susan was the official sports nutritionist for the American Diabetes Association Walk America program; as well as the Sports Nutritionist for the Elite Runners Distance Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid New York.
5. Featured guest on numerous radio and television shows including  the “1010 wins radio winning womens breakfast series” and Fox News. She has been interviewed on  various nutrition and diet topics. 
6. A valued contributor to many books on a variety of nutrition topics (primarily weight management and diabetes). Susan has written articles and has been quoted in several publications including Men’s Health, New York Newsday, Woman’s Day, Better Homes and Gardens, Fitness Magazine, Sports Illustrated for Women, Blue Cross Blue Shield Health Supplement and the New York Daily News.
7. Adjunct professor of nutrition at Queens College in New York for over 13 years and taught at the Academy of Applied Personal Training Education at Hofstra University.
8. Consultant and spokesperson for several food companies. 
Education and Certification
Susan earned her Masters Degree in Applied Physiology and Nutrition from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City. Her dual masters degree in “Applied Physiology and Nutrition” afforded her the opportunity to practice as a nutritionist and exercise physiologist. She is certified in “Adult Weight Management”, through the American Dietetic Association.

Lisa is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist. Since 1982 Lisa has been helping people improve their health with good nutrition. Lisa specializes in weight management, diabetes and gastrointestinal disorders. She finds passion in her work by teaching children and adults to eat healthier and live better.

Lisa is in private practice with the North Shore Medical Group-Mount Sinai Hospital in Huntington, New York and on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

She received her B.S. in Food and Nutrition and her M.A. in Clinical Nutrition from New York University. 

In addition to being a Registered Dietitian, Nutritionist and Certified Diabetes Educator, Lisa is also credentialed as a Specialist in Pediatric and Adult Weight Management by The American Dietetic Association. Her clinical experience includes over a decade in three major teaching hospitals including St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan and The Frances Stern Nutrition Center at Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston. She is a Past Chairman of The Nutrition Entrepreneur Dietetic Practice Group of The American Dietetic Association and a recent board member of the New York State Dietetic Association.

Lisa enjoys kickboxing, traveling and cooking healthy meals for her husband and two sons. She is passionate about eating well and living a healthy life. Lisa is currently writing a book on healthy eating and weight management for teens. This timely book should be on the shelves in spring 2011.
