Officially known as Annona muricata, soursop is a tropical fruit native to South America and widely enjoyed across the Caribbean and Central America. You may hear it called guanabana, graviola, or custard apple. On the outside, it looks like an oversized avocado wearing armor—dark green, oval-shaped, and covered in soft, prickly spikes.

Crack it open, however, and soursop reveals its softer side. The creamy white pulp is studded with large black seeds and tastes like a beautiful blend of strawberries and apples with a hint of citrus. Smooth, custard-like, and tropical, it’s no surprise this fruit is adored throughout Latin American cuisine.

While soursop can be hard to find in U.S. supermarkets, it often appears in Latin American, Caribbean, and international markets. If you’re lucky enough to find it fresh, many nutrition experts recommend enjoying it raw to savor its natural flavor and texture—just remember to spit out the seeds, which are toxic.


Nutrition Profile of Soursop

Like many fruits, soursop is rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

One cup (225 g) of raw soursop provides:

While antioxidants are essential for good health, researchers still don’t know the exact quantities needed to see measurable benefits from soursop alone.

Lab studies show soursop extracts can kill bacteria linked to:

  • Certain yeast infections

These findings are promising but still laboratory-based, so more research is required before real-world benefits are confirmed.

Did you know that sweet potatoes have been cultivated for thousands of years? Originating in Central America, they quickly spread across the globe, becoming a staple in many cuisines. These versatile gems have stood the test of time and carved out a special place on our plates.

Growing Sweet Potatoes.

Whether you have a green thumb or are a newbie in the gardening world, growing your sweet potatoes is a rewarding experience. These plants thrive in warm climates and require well-drained soil. Planting them in late spring or early summer will allow you to enjoy a bountiful harvest come autumn. So, roll up your sleeves, grab your gardening tools, and let's get digging!

Storing

Once you've harvested your sweet potatoes, the next step is storing them properly. Store them in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place to keep their flavors intact. Sweet Potato Tartlet

This year, I was so excited about our sweet potato crops. I decided to make Sweet Potato Tartlets as an appetizer.




Ingredients
1 medium sweet potato, peeled and chopped
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 package (1.9 ounces) frozen miniature phyllo tart shells
15 miniature marshmallows
15 walnuts

 

Directions

1. Place sweet potato in a small saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until tender. Drain.

2. Mash sweet potato with butter, syrup, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small bowl.

3. Place 1 tablespoon of potato mixture in each tart shell. Place on an ungreased baking sheet. Top with marshmallows. Bake at 350° for 8-12 minutes or until marshmallows are lightly browned. It yields about 15 tartlets.

A cappuccino is an Italian coffee drink traditionally prepared with a double espresso and steamed milk foam. Variations of the drink involve using cream instead of milk and flavoring with cinnamon or chocolate powder. Wikipedia.

Chocolate Cappuccino, modified
Yield: 4 servings


Ingredients
1/2 cup chocolate liqueur
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 cup hot brewed espresso
3/4 cup scalded milk, 1%
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Chocolate shavings (optional)

Directions
1.         Combine liqueur and syrup in a microwave-safe dish.
2.         Heat on HIGH for 30 seconds.
3.         Divide the liqueur mixture among 4 mugs
4.         Add 1/4 cup espresso to each.
5.         Froth milk; pour about 1/4 cup milk into each mug.
6.         Top with ground cinnamon; garnish with chocolate shavings, if desired.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon canola oil
1 cup chopped red onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 cup chopped zucchini
1 cup fresh corn kernels
2 tablespoons thinly sliced jalapeรฑo pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 (14.5-ounce) can of organic black beans, rinsed and drained
8 (6-inch) corn tortillas, cut into wedges
Cooking spray
2 ounces shredded reduced-fat Mexican-blend cheese (about 1/2 cup)
3/4 cup diced peeled avocado (about 1 small)
2 ounces crumbled queso fresco (about 1/2 cup)
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
1 medium tomato, diced
4 lime wedges

Instructions
  • Preheat broiler to high.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil to pan; swirl to coat. Add onion; sautรฉ 5 minutes or until tender. Add garlic; sautรฉ 30 seconds. Add zucchini and next 5 ingredients (through salt); cook 5 minutes or until crisp-tender. Add beans; cook for 2 minutes or until thoroughly heated.
  • Arrange tortilla wedges in a single layer on a large jelly-roll pan coated with cooking spray. Lightly coat tortilla wedges with cooking spray. Broil 2 minutes on each side or until lightly browned and crisp. Sprinkle shredded Mexican cheese evenly over tortillas. Broil 1 minute or until cheese melts.
  • Top chips evenly with bean mixture, avocado, queso fresco, cilantro, and tomato. Serve with lime wedges.

  1. Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce – 1 lb pasta, 1 can crushed tomatoes, garlic, and herbs. Add sautรฉed onion or grated carrot.

  2. Chili with Beans – 1 lb ground turkey or 2 cans beans, 1 can tomatoes, 1 can corn, chili seasoning.

  3. Baked Potatoes with Broccoli & Cheese – 4 russet potatoes, frozen broccoli, shredded cheese.

  4. Vegetable Stir-Fry with Rice – Frozen stir-fry mix, soy sauce, garlic, and cooked rice.

  5. Egg & Vegetable Fried Noodles – Instant or spaghetti noodles, eggs, mixed veggies, soy sauce.

  6. Cabbage & Carrot Soup – ½ head cabbage, 3 carrots, 1 can tomatoes, and broth cubes. Serve with toast.

  7. Lentil Stew with Rice – 1 cup lentils, 1 cup rice, onion, garlic, and carrots.
